"Dou Pavilion" originates from a prefab building product “Checkered Playroom” for pre-school education program for remote western China. It is developed by Unitinno and Chinese University of Hong Kong team led by Prof. ZHU Jingxiang. It adapts some design changes to react itself to the Mediterranean summer, long distance transportation as well as requirement from opening ceremony.
Ten “Checkered Playroom” were built in 2015 in different villages in northwest China's Gansu Province, with area ranging from 40 to 70 square meters. These buildings are composed of concave and convex squares, which are similar to the old measuring tool Chinese pecker - “Dou”. When the word “Dou” used as an verb, it also indicates how the wooden pieces were interlocked to form intelligent structure, which is exactly the pursuit of the making of “Checkered Playroom” By arranging the opening on different levels and to various directions, these buildings help children conduct spatial exploration inside amazing shelters, as well as inspire teachers, parents, supervisor and volunteer explore potential for pre-school programs.
The design of above building product has integrated architectural solution on climate, manufacturing, transportation, construction, furniture, appliances, and maintenance. As a result, it successfully helps the domestic charity groups realizing their series education centers in scattered villages, and stimulating innovative program and management method for children in rural areas.
